Predatory Online Gang Stalking Within the Public UFO Community

Linda Cortile Brooklyn Bridge Abduction

The following paper is a collection of my observations and thoughts about the culture of predatory online Gang stalking within the public UFO community. The purpose of this paper is to detail and discuss the observed nature of this particular culture of activity, including the nature and behaviour of the people who practice it. Also discussed is how such behaviour is received and treated by the general public depending on where it presents itself online.

The practice of predatory online Gang stalking is generally defined as the consistent and coordinated online surveillance and harassment of a targeted individual by multiple parties. Its sole purpose is to repeatedly single out that individual for public ridicule and vilification. The reasons for Gang stalking include attempting to publicly besmirch an individual’s name, attempting to publicly discredit their work, attempting to discourage them from doing their work and attempting to break down their personal resolve. Therefore, Gang stalking behaviour can generally be identified when a group of people begins to devote significant amounts of their time, energy, resources, and in some cases lives, to the specific task of repeatedly publicly ridiculing and vilifying specific individuals indefinitely.

In the public UFO community, UFO and alien abduction case witnesses, abductees and researchers have been repeatedly subjected to Gang stalking for many years. Some of this occurred before the arrival of widespread public internet use which began in the 1990s. Prior to that arrival, the main ways of publicly disseminating claims was generally through books, newspapers, magazines, newsletters, in-person lectures, and recorded interviews. Since then, however, virtually anyone, from practically anywhere can now easily, quickly, and economically, build a website or other online medium, from which they can internationally present nearly any kind of claim on any topic or person, without any fears of serious repercussions for their words or actions. This has led to an increase in the prevalence and intensity of Gang stalking behaviour.

In recent years, the advent of widespread internet use by the general public has brought about a conjunction of sorts between certain members of the online pseudo skeptical community of the public UFO and alien abduction research fields, and certain members of the online troll community. The former of these communities employs the use of false evidence, omissions of fact, ad hominem attacks and ridicule, to denigrate UFO and alien abduction research cases, researchers, witnesses, and abductees. The latter of these communities generally employ unprovoked and unpredictable online ad hominem attacks to create and foster atmospheres of hostility, tension, and confrontation. This conjunction has brought about an increase in the intensity and instances of baseless and hostile denigration of UFO and alien abduction research cases, researchers, witnesses and abductees.

Weblogs, commonly referred to as Blogs, are created and utilised for the purpose of connecting and interacting with other people online about a specific topic. Blogs can have many contributors, each of whom communicates by messages, or posts, with other blog contributors. Thus, blogs have the ability to bring many like-minded individuals together to discuss their shared interests and varying points of view on those interests. When blogs are used in cases of online Gang stalking, the primary shared interest, and the most commonly preferred activity of the blog’s author and contributors, is repeatedly declaring their dislike of, or disapproval for, a specific individual on questionable evidential foundations. What separates this type of behaviour from normal instances of freedom of speech, where someone expresses an opinion, of any nature or composition, about someone else, or their statements or activities, is the length, extent, and ongoing fixated focus of a Gang stalker’s efforts.

In regards to specific cases within the public UFO community, Gang stalkers generally do not own up to or acknowledge the true motive behind their words and actions. Instead, they invariably argue that their words and actions are performed and conducted under motives of nobility. For example, when a UFO or alien abduction researcher is specifically targeted by a group of Gang stalkers, one of the motives generally given (by the gang stalkers) is that they are trying to aid legitimate UFO and alien abduction research, as well as protect and help the personal well-being of the UFO witnesses and abductees assisting the targeted researcher. They commonly indicate that they do this by applying a rigorously critical and objective thought process as well as a proper detailed and executed scientific investigation, to the task of identifying unprofessional and unethical researchers and research practices. When a UFO witness or alien abductee is specifically targeted by a group of Gang stalkers, the same general motives and methods are commonly given. The only difference is the task, which they commonly claim is weeding out liars and hoaxers posing as witnesses and abductees.

Another dubious motive Gang stalkers have been known to give for specifically targeting a UFO witness or abductee is that they themselves (the Gang stalkers) are in fact being stalked by the UFO witness or abductee in question and are simply victims trying to defend themselves from unjust persecution.

The primary way to differentiate Gang stalkers from legitimately critical and concerned researchers who are actually interested in improving the quality of UFO and alien abduction research, as well as the personal well being of UFO witnesses and abductees, is to identify who actually follows through in trying to improve these things, and to ascertain whose actions do not contradict their words. For instance, if an individual, or group of people, claim to want to improve the quality of UFO and alien abduction research, as well as the lives of UFO witnesses and abductees, then their subsequent words and actions should reflect that. However, if they make this claim but then openly make a statement to the effect that they believe all abductees are lying about their experiences, then the part of their claim about wanting to improve alien abduction research and help abductees rings hollow.

If they claim to be UFO and alien abduction researchers, as well as UFO witnesses and abductees, who are trying to protect and help other UFO witnesses and abductees by publicly exposing unethical and unprofessional researchers, and research practices, then it does not follow that they would repeatedly attempt to smear and discredit other UFO witnesses and abductees. If, for instance, they engaged in the propagation and endorsement of provably false claims, constructed by themselves and other parties, about particular UFO witnesses and abductees, then their claim of trying to protect and help such people is inconsistent with their own behaviour.

Websites and blogs are the mediums used by online Gang stalkers. These mediums operate under, and are overseen by, website and blog hosting businesses, commonly referred to as hosts. These hosts each have a specific set of rules in which the websites and blogs that operate under them are expected to abide by if they wish to remain hosted by them. These rules are generally referred to as a Terms of Service Agreement. When a host is made aware that a website or blog under their operation is being used to repeatedly publicly harass and vilify a specific individual, their responses and actions differ markedly depending on who the host is. Some hosts, if you present them with proof that certain content in a website or blog they are hosting violates their Terms of Service Agreement, the host will contact the administrators of the website or blog and inform them that they have to remove the content in question or have their entire website or blog taken offline by the host. Other hosts, however, choose not to get involved in matters of content, even when presented with proof that a violation, or violations, of their Terms of Service Agreement has occurred. Such hosts instead inform you that you need to provide them with a court order specifically instructing them to remove the content in question in order for it to be removed.

What this basically means is that if a stalker, or gang of stalkers, wish to create a website or blog devoted primarily to repeatedly publicly harassing and vilifying a specific person in perpetuity, then certain hosts will allow such a website or blog to run under their operation unimpeded in any way, even if they are presented with proof that the content of that website or blog violates the host’s Terms of Service agreement. The results of such inaction on the part of the hosts can see websites, which, for example, were built to present, and allow people to present, impartial facts about a subject, becoming co-opted and ruled by extremists who remove any presented facts they don’t personally approve of.

Online Gang stalking damages the individuals practicing it in addition to their targets. The devotion of extensive amounts of their time, energy, and resources to perpetually trying to publicly destroy personal and professional reputations, as well as locating, contacting and sending their claims to anyone who knows or may come into contact with the targeted victims, is a wholly negative and consuming activity. Time, energy and resources devoted to a negative activity are things that aren’t being devoted to a positive activity.

If a group of individual’s online Gang stalking activities persist for many years it has the potential to damage their own reputations, as well as distract from and overshadow any other contributions they attempt to make to a specific field of study. If, for instance, they purport themselves to be researchers of a specific field of study, but they appear to spend more time on the public ridicule and vilification of specific individuals, then they become more known for their latter activity than the former one.

The UFO and alien abduction research communities obtain much of their data from the careful and respectful engagement and interviewing of UFO witnesses and abductees. UFO witnesses and abductees are on guard against ridicule and derision of their experiences and could easily withdraw from assisting researchers if they experience such behaviour from them. If a group of individuals is trying to become a part of these research communities, and wish to engage and interview UFO witnesses and abductees about their experiences, then they may find that those people might be unwilling to speak or work with them because of their history of publicly ridiculing and vilifying other witnesses and abductees.

If the group applies such behaviour to specific researchers in these communities then they may find that other researchers from those communities want nothing to do with them for fear of receiving similar treatment.

It is not unheard of for specific members of the scientific and academic research communities to engage in, or support, Gang stalking particularly when the targeted individual is someone who is involved in, or affiliated with, the controversial research fields of UFOs and alien abductions. Intelligence, and reputable scientific and academic credentials do not always necessarily eliminate bias, and the refusal to acknowledge and work with certain UFO and alien abduction case evidence.  Because of this it is essential to always scrutinise and fact-check the claims of anyone, regardless of their credentials and professions.

For those on the receiving end of Gang stalking, it can be a very stressful, hurtful and traumatic experience, and surprisingly little can be done to fight it and to stop it. Attempting to pursue legal action, gaining legal representation and claiming instances of slander and/or libel under Tort law, can cost upwards of $US 70,000. Such legal action holds no guarantee of success, restitution of legal fees or awarding of any damages.

Attempting to engage and reason with Gang stalkers generally only results in exacerbating the problem by providing them with the attention, and connection to their target, that they appear to crave. The more attention they receive from their target, the more inclined they are to persist in their Gang stalking activities.

The primary approach advocated by legal and mental health professionals is to ignore the Gang stalking. While such an approach is easier said than done for the victims, it, at the very least, does not appear to make the problem any worse than it already is.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of a handful of disorders that have been postulated as causal factors in the distortion or vilification campaigns synonymous with Gang stalking. Short of examination and diagnosis by capable professionals, we cannot know for certain whether it plays a role in the behaviour of Gang stalkers. Some clinicians are reluctant to make a diagnosis of BPD because of the significant stigma attached to such an identification (A diagnosis of BPD can result in a patient being poorly treated overall by the mental health system because they are viewed as having a troublesome personality rather than a treatable biological illness). If that’s true, even if someone isn’t formally diagnosed with BPD it cannot be ruled out as a causative factor.

Whether the groups of individuals practicing Gang stalking realise it or not, their only actual unity lies in their common hatred of specific targets. If any one of them had a change of heart about their own, and their accomplice’s, activities, and wished to stop, it is entirely possible that their accomplices would turn on them and make them the focus of their rage. Even without that, if anyone in the group did suffer from BPD and felt that they were receiving less attention than they deserved from the rest of the group, it is entirely possible that person would turn on the group. If the entire group is made up of people with BPD, it is also a possibility that sooner or later they will end up targeting each other. The reason for this is because it is within the scope of behaviour commonly attributed to BPD. Particularly when the person with BPD senses anything that they construe, rightly or wrongly, as them being abandoned.

That groups of people engaged in Gang stalking can potentially find themselves being Gang stalked as a direct result of it seems almost poetic in nature. But any people unified by their common hatred are especially vulnerable to being engulfed it.
